Venice historic centre is car free and consist of six areas (sestieri in Italian). These are Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo and Santa Croce.
Hiking and travelling by water bus is the way to explore the city. It is easy to get lost in the centre: there are about 150 canals, 400 bridges and lots of alleyways. But because you're on an island you won't walk off it.
